Each Thursday morning I meet with a few people to discuss our businesses and get sales and marketing ideas from each other. During that time we also discuss something that we've all read during the past week. Right now we are reading Seth Godin's Tribes: We Need You To Lead Us. Just as food for thought, I figured I'd share a few brief points from his book.
In starting out, Seth defines a tribe as a group of people connected to each other, a leader and an idea. Since the beginning of time people have always been part of some group because there has always been the desire to "belong" somewhere, and to give and take from like-minded people.
Some groups are stuck. They are not going anywhere. Seth says that they are almost like factories being run by managers instead of a tribe being led by a leader. Every one of them is a work in progress, if only the action is taken by a leader to energize and transform the group!
In thinking of your own company or business, are you managing or are you leading? Do you have people punching out on the time clock at exactly 5:00 o'clock or do they get so wrapped up in their projects that they pay no attention to the clock?
What are you doing to lead? How are you getting your people to buy into the idea that this is our business, for our benefit, and together we shall make a difference?
